The Introductory Course is the first step to gain an in-depth understanding of Monty’s concepts. Students from various equine backgrounds are welcome to take part, as there are no prerequisites. To those of you with little or no horse knowledge, we recommend prior participation in the H101 Clinic.

The Introductory Course is designed to provide you with a well-rounded knowledge in general horsemanship in the basics of horse performance, breeding, feeding and nutrition, with a strong emphasis on horse psychology. As the foundation of Monty’s work and a prerequisite for the Advanced Course, you will learn the method of Join-Up® as it relates to various environments. You will have the opportunity to build your skills in Dually™ halter work, long lining, herding exercises and loading.
Your first two weeks consist of hands-on experience as well as theories in horse psychology. Following this you will return home to complete several months of distance learning modules and field study (submitted via video). It is during the field study period that you learn about horse performance, breeding, feeding and nutrition through a distance-learning program. Then you will return for practical and written exams, at the successful completion of which you will graduate from the Introductory Program.
Graduates of the Introductory Course are offered the opportunity to continue their education by completing the Advanced Course and, upon personal selection by Monty, the Instructors’ Internship. Only Certified Instructors are able to teach, demonstrate and advertise their services for monetary gain.

The Introductory Course is also offered in a modular format, with each short course counting towards completion of the training programme. These can be completed at your own pace, in order to fit in with your work/lifestyle requirements and, in certain cases, arranged privately (please contact to discuss details).
Modules include:
• Join-Up
• Long-Lining
• Horse Psychology
• Ground Manners
Join-Up is pivotal to your relationship with horses. This four-day clinic will offer a solid understanding of what Monty calls ‘Equus,’ the language of the horse. Attendees will learn the body language necessary to achieve Join-Up with a horse, the trust-based foundation for all equine disciplines, as well as discover the importance of posture, breathing, spatial awareness and the power of intention in the presence of horses. The opportunity to gain the understanding of gestures and subtle movements that can be very significant in the relationship with the horse will be offered. You will also become more proficient with Monty’s Dually™ halter, learning Monty’s concepts through demonstrations, discussions, practical hands-on exercises and round pen work. Certified Instructors will demonstrate and teach these concepts with a variety of horses to illustrate the effectiveness of Monty’s work in this important foundation of non-violent training. This clinic teaches groundwork with horses and does not include any ridden work or exercises. The double long lining clinic usually takes place the two days following this clinic and is a great addition to the experience.

Key Learning Points:
• Non-violent approach to working with the horse
• The language of ‘Equus’
• Building a trust-based partnership
• How horses learn
• Join-Up and Follow Up™
• Dually halter work
• Round pen work

Discover and learn how effective double long lining can be to bring the horse into balance, enhance their outline and prepare them both physically and psychologically for further learning. Double line longing increases one’s control of the horse through rein pressure, even when you ride. This unique, easy-to-learn technique combines Monty’s Join-Up® communication concepts with the effectiveness of double long lining. Single line lunging can cause disadvantages to the horse’s ligaments, tendons and muscles causing them to work against one another. Horse advocates and owners will learn the difference and take home valuable training to apply this knowledge. Join-Up® clinic must be attended prior to enrolling in the double long line clinic.

Key Learning Points:
• Non-violent approach to working with a horse
• The language of ‘EQUUS’
• Benefits of long lining with two lines
• Disadvantages of single line lunging
• Tacking up and attaching double long lines
• Working the horse on double long lines
• Different speeds and directions
• Different locations
• Ongoing double long line training

This is a chance to experience first hand what it is about horses that fascinates all of us. Get ready for the perfect weekend! Come away with the knowledge of what inspired Monty’s book, The Man Who Listens to Horses, read by millions and responsible for revolutionizing the way we enjoy horses.
Monty’s team will guide your actions around horses, building confidence through the knowledge of Monty’s violence-free training concepts enabling one to be comfortable in the presence of the horse. We will cover ground manners, safe handling while grooming and learn how to lead a horse correctly using Monty’s gentle methods. The highlight of the class is the opportunity to complete your own Join-Up® with a horse.
You may be inspired to come back and further your education with one of our other courses; regardless, you will have joined a unique group of people who now have a better understanding of ‘Equus,’ the language of the horse, how horses learn, think and see.

• Building a trust-based partnership
• Approaching, touching and handling a horse
• How horses learn, think and see
• Join-Up in the round pen
